Patients have experienced liver problems while taking this drug. Children under the age of 2 are at a greater risk for liver problems. Liver functions should be tested by your physician to decide if Depakote is the best medication for you. Depakote should not be taken if the patient has liver disease.

Patients with pancreatic problems such as pancreatic cancer, or pancreatitis should also be careful when taking this medication.

People with severe emotional problems or recurring suicidal thoughts are also at danger if this medicine is taken. Depakote has proven to increase depression and suicidal thought and tendencies in some patients.
