Premarin Information

Premarin is a hormone replacement therapy medication that is used to treat menopause symptoms and to reduce chances of osteoporosis. Taken alone, Premarin is used by women who have had a hysterectomy that cannot produce estrogen. For women who have not had a hysterectomy, Premarin is taken in combination with a progestin tablet, or they have the option of Prempro, which is a combination estrogen and progestin medication.

How it works

Premarin works by delivering low-dose hormones to your body to restore your natural hormone levels. You may begin to feel relief from some symptoms within three weeks. Premarin reduces itching, burning sensations, dryness, difficulty urinating, and painful intercourse. Premarin is also used to prevent osteoporosis. This is prevented by increasing bone density in the spine and hip areas, which is necessary in order to avoid post-menopausal osteoporosis. Premarin is sometimes used to replace estrogen in women with ovarian failure or some types of cancer, both in women and men.

How to use it

Premarin comes in many different dosages. It is important that you take Premarin as it was prescribed by your doctor. The tablet form of Premarin must be taken with a full glass of water, with or without food. Do not increase the dosage or the length of time you are on Premarin without consulting your physician.

Side Effects of Premarin

Like any medication, Premarin does have some side effects associated with use. Some less serious side effects are mild nausea, changes in weight or appetite, vaginal discharge or itching, and headache. Serious side effects stomach pain, migraines, swelling in ankles, and problems with vision or balance.

Other Brands

Another brand of Premarin is Prempro, which is a combination estrogen and progestin therapy medication.

Premarin Facts

The name PREMARIN is obtained from the three words "PREgnant MARes' urINE", which indicate the source of its major components.

PREMARIN is a form of hormone replacement therapy most commonly used in post-menopausal women who have undergone hysterectomy.

Because PREMARIN utilizes urine from mares, it has been the cause for contention between the manufacturer and animal rights groups.

PREMARIN is unusual in that its major components (conjugated estrogens) are obtained from a natural animal source.
