About Ventolin diskus

What Ventolin diskus is used for

Your doctor has prescribed a medicine called VENTOLIN (salbutamol sulfate) DISKUS inhalation powder to you. It is used to help breathing problems in:

  • Asthma

  • Other chest illnesses.

What Ventolin diskus does

Salbutamol is one of a group of medicines called bronchodilators. Salbutamol relaxes the muscles in the walls of the small air passages in the lungs. This helps to open up the airways and so helps to relieve chest tightness, wheezing and cough so that you can breathe more easily.

When Ventolin diskus should not be used

Do not use if you are allergic to it or any of the components of its formulation including lactose (milk sugar) or milk protein (see What the important nonmedicinal ingredients are:).

What the medicinal ingredient is

VENTOLIN DISKUS inhalation powder contains the active ingredient, salbutamol sulfate.

What the important nonmedicinal ingredients for Ventolin diskus are

VENTOLIN DISKUS inhalation powder contains lactose (milk sugar), including milk protein which acts as the “carrier”.

What dosage forms Ventolin diskus comes in

VENTOLIN DISKUS inhalation powder is a disposable blue-coloured plastic inhaler device containing a foil strip with 60 blisters. Each blister contains 200 µg of the active ingredient salbutamol (as the sulfate salt). The blisters protect the powder for inhalation from effects of the atmosphere.

Warnings and Precautions

Before you use VENTOLIN DISKUS talk to your doctor or pharmacist if:

  • You have ever had to stop taking other medicines for this illness because you were allergic to them or they caused problems.

  • You are having treatment for a thyroid condition.

  • You are having treatment for high blood pressure or a heart problem.

  • You have been told that you are allergic to lactose (milk sugar) or milk protein.

  • You have diabetes.

  • You have a past history of seizures.

If the relief of wheezing or chest tightness is not as good as usual, tell your doctor as soon as possible. If you notice a sudden worsening of your shortness of breath and wheeze shortly after taking your medicine, tell your doctor as soon as possible. It may be that your chest condition is worsening and you may need to add another type of medicine to your treatment.

Your doctor may decide not to prescribe this medicine during the first 3 months of pregnancy, nor if you are breast feeding a baby. However, there may be circumstances when your doctor advises you differently.

Interactions with Ventolin diskus

Make sure that your doctor knows what other medicines you are taking (such as those for depression, allergies, other airway-opening medications (e.g. other asthma medications) blood pressure and heart medications, and water pills (diuretics), etc.), including those you can buy without a prescription as well as herbal and alternative medicines.

Proper Use of Ventolin diskus (see package insert for illustrations)

Carefully follow the instructions shown. If you have any problems, tell your doctor of pharmacist.

It is important that your use your VENTOLIN DISKUS inhalation powder properly to ensure that you receive maximum benefit from your medicine.

When you take your DISKUS inhalation device out of its box, it will be in the closed position.

A new DISKUS inhalation device contains 60 individually protected doses of your medicine, in powder form. The device has a dose counter which tells you the number of doses remaining. It counts down from 60 to 1. To show when the last five doses have been reached the numbers appear in red.

Each dose is accurately measured and hygienically protected. It requires no maintenance, and no refilling.

The DISKUS inhalation device is easy to use. When you need a dose, just follow the four simple steps:

  1. Open

  2. Slide

  3. Inhale

  4. Close

Sliding the lever of your DISKUS inhalation device opens a small hole in the mouthpiece and unwraps a dose ready for you to inhale it. When you close the DISKUS inhalation device, the lever automatically moves back to its original position ready for your next dose when you need it. The outer case protects your DISKUS inhalation device when it is not in use.

  1. Open: To open your DISKUS inhalation device hold the outer case in one hand and put the thumb of your other hand on the thumb grip. Push your thumb away from you as far as it will go.

  2. Slide: Hold your DISKUS inhalation device with the mouthpiece towards you. Slide the lever away from you as far as it will go—until it clicks. Your DISKUS inhalation device is now ready to use. Every time the lever is pushed back a dose is made available for inhaling. This is shown by the dose counter. Do not play with the lever as this releases dose which will be wasted.

  3. Inhale: Before you start to inhale the dose read though this section carefully.

    • Hold the DISKUS inhalation device away from your mouth. Breathe out as far as is comfortable. Remember—never breathe into your DISKUS inhalation device.

    • Put the mouthpiece to your lips. Breathe in steadily and deeply—through the DISKUS inhalation device, not through your nose.

    • Remove the DISKUS inhalation device from your mouth.

    • Hold your breath for about 10 seconds or for as long as is comfortable.

    • Breathe out slowly.

  4. Close: To close your DISKUS inhalation device, put your thumb in the thumb grip, and slide the thumb grip back towards you, as far as it will go.

When you close the DISKUS inhalation device, it clicks shut. The lever automatically returns to its original position and is reset. Your DISKUS inhalation device is now ready for you to use again.

Remember

Keep your DISKUS inhalation device dry. Keep it closed when not in use. Never breathe into your DISKUS inhalation device. Only slide the lever when you are ready to take a dose.

During inhalation, children should be assisted or supervised by an adult who knows the proper use of the device.

Usual dose

Use your VENTOLIN DISKUS inhalation powder only as directed by your doctor, nurse or pharmacist. Your doctor will tell you how often you should use your DISKUS inhalation device. If you are not sure how much or when to take your medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

The action of VENTOLIN (salbutamol sulfate) may last up to 6 hours and should last at least 4 hours. Call you doctor immediately if the effect lasts for less than 3 hours or if you notice a sudden worsening of your shortness of breath. Do not increase the dose or the number of times you use your medicine without asking your doctor. If symptoms get worse or you require your DISKUS inhalation device more than before, tell you doctor as soon as possible.

When using VENTOLIN DISKUS inhalation powder, other medicines (including asthma medicines) should only be used when prescribed by your doctor.

Unless your doctor has recommended otherwise, the total daily dose for adults and children (4 years and older) should not exceed 4 inhalations (800 µg).

If you regularly use one inhalation of VENTOLIN DISKUS inhalation powder more than three times a week, and take no other asthma medication, you should talk to you doctor who may want to reassess your treatment plan.

Do not take more doses or use your DISKUS inhalation device more often than your doctor advises.

If you have to go to hospital for an operation, take your DISKUS inhalation device with you and tell the doctor what medicine(s) you are taking.

Overdose

If you accidentally take a larger dose than prescribed, you are more likely to get side effects like a faster heart beat, headaches and feeling shaky or restless. These effects usually wear off within a few hours, but you should tell your doctor as soon as possible.

In the event of an excessive overdosage tell your doctor without delay or contact your nearest hospital emergency department or poison control centre. Take this leaflet or your medication with you so that the hospital or poison control centre will know what you have taken.

Missed dose
