Serevent diskus General Information

Serevent diskus is the brand name for the drug salmeterol, a beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, which is used to treat asthma and some types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

How does Serevent diskus work & What does it do?

Serevent diskus is used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is most often used to treat chronic or long-term asthmatic conditions which may not respond to more acute asthma medications, and is often used in treatment in conjunction with other drugs such as corticosteroids. Serevent diskus is a long acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, which allows it to provide up to 12 hours of relief from breathing problems, unlike many conventional asthma medications, which only last around six hours. While Serevent diskus does not prevent an asthma attack already in progress, daily use of this medication reduces the frequency and severity of attacks, and the corticosteroid treatment is used to mitigate acute asthma attacks. This drug's action is to bind to the smooth muscle in the lungs and airway, and relax them, which allows easier breathing for asthma patients and a reduction in their episodes. Serevent diskus' long duration of action comes from the fact that, unlike other medications, it diffuses into the plasma membranes of lung cells, where it later elutes in order to bind the necessary adrenergic receptors to provide the patient with additional relief.

When/How is Serevent diskus taken/used/applied?

Serevent diskus is available, like most asthma medications, in an inhaler form. There are two types of inhalers which this medication is normally administered with. The first is a metered-dose inhaler, which releases a set amount of aerosol containing the medication into the patient's lungs. The second is a disc-shaped inhaler which releases a powdered form of Serevent diskus into the patient's lungs. This medication is released in 50 mcg units, and is administered as a single dose twice daily, once in the morning, and once in the evening, in order to provide constant relief for the asthma patient.

Side Effects of Serevent diskus:

Common side effects of Serevent diskus are similar to those of other asthma inhaler medications, and include headache, coughing, nasal congestion, nasal irritation, nausea, and respiratory infection. Some patients experienced combined ear, nose, and throat pain after treatment with Serevent diskus. Central nervous system side effects were more rare, but some patients reported nightmares, insomnia, and parasthesia. However, these side effects were relatively rare for asthmatic patients using this medication, and in some cases, placebo groups actually saw higher incidences of side effects. For patients using Serevent diskus for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the side effect profile was similar to asthmatic patients, with the major difference being that some cases of hypertension were reported.

Other Brand Names for Serevent diskus:

The patent for the powder delivery system of salmeterol is currently valid in the United States, and no other brand name or generic versions of this particular disc delivery system is available.

Safety Information:

Although Serevent diskus is well-tolerated by most patients, the Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning that prolonged use of long acting beta-2 adrenergic agonists may lead to a paradoxical worsening of asthmatic symptoms, and death has occasionally resulted from overuse of such medications. Although prescribed in conjunction with corticosteroids, caution must be used with long-term therapy involving both medications, and Serevant diskus is not meant to be used in conjunction with short-acting adrenergic agonists due to the increased chance of health risks and adverse reactions. Patients with hypertension or heart problems may use Serevant diskus under close medical supervision, although this is not always recommended due to the risk of increased hypertension. However, in conjunction with medical monitoring and beta-blocker therapy, Serevant diskus has been successfully used to treat patients with comorbid asthma and hypertension. Excessive reactions to medications such as Serevent diskus include hypertension, aggression, dizziness, angina, and seizures, and immediate medical attention should be sought in these cases.
